Sample fieldnote — created to introduce the journal.
Some days seem to pass without leaving a mark. The same route, the same errands, the same cup on the same table. Yet familiarity is only one way to look at a place.
Look a little longer and the scene begins to change. Light catches the edge of a window. A tree that was green last week has turned gold. A conversation carries a sentence worth keeping.
Begin with one detail
There is no need to make noticing into another task. Choose a single thing: the sound outside before opening a screen, the color of the sky on the way home, the feeling of a warm mug in both hands.
Attention works best when it has somewhere small to land.
Keep a fieldnote
A fieldnote can be a sentence, a photograph, or a question. It does not need a conclusion. Try writing down one thing you would otherwise forget, without worrying about whether it is interesting enough.
- Something you saw.
- Something you heard.
- Something you want to return to.
Over time, these fragments become a record of what matters to you.
Leave some room
Not every moment needs to become a story. Sometimes the best thing to do with a beautiful detail is simply to enjoy it. Paying attention is enough.
