Make something small, just because

Sample fieldnote — created to introduce the journal.

There is a particular pleasure in making something that does not need to impress anyone. A sketch of a view. A recipe with one ingredient changed. A little website for things you want to remember.

Choose a small beginning

Make the first version small enough to finish. One page, one paragraph, one afternoon. Constraints can give an idea somewhere to take shape.

Follow what interests you

You are allowed to try a color because you like it. You can learn a tool just to see what it does. Curiosity does not need a business case.

Keep what you learn

When you finish, write down what surprised you and what you might try next. A small project can leave you with something more useful than a polished result: another question worth following.
